Star Alliance, the global airline alliances made up of 28 member airlines, is celebrating its 20th anniversary with a worldwide mileage competition, offering prizes that will turn several winners into mileage millionaires.
The alliance, which was voted the best of the world’s three major alliances in the 2017 SKYTRAX World Airline Awards, will be gifting 21 lucky winners with prizes of up to 1 million frequent flier miles to be used on any of the 28 member airlines.
Twenty-one of the alliance’s 28 airlines are contributing prizes, with 18 of them contributing either 1 million miles or 1 million frequent flier points.
Scandinavia’s SAS Airlines is contributing four round-the-world business class tickets while Air China and Shenzhen Air together are contributing 1 million kilometres, and Air New Zealand is ponying up 20,000 Airpoints dollars. In sum, a nice array of prizes.
This is not, however, a random drawing; it is a competition with the theme of the connection of people and cultures. Participants will be required to share a first-person cultural experience “[I]nvolving such intercultural connections and interactions in an artistic and creative fashion,” the alliance said in a statement announcing the contest.
What that means is you will have to present a photograph that depicts the experience, then describe it and its unique attributes in 200 characters or less. Descriptions can be written in English, French, German, Portuguese, Spanish, Korean, Japanese, Simplified Chinese or Traditional Chinese.
Entries will be judged by a group of independent experts, including Star Alliance’s 20th Anniversary partner, National Geographic.
Certainly, a contest is more work than simply checking a box and hoping for the best, but just think what you could do with 1 million miles. Here are some of the many options:
Next, contestants will upload a profile picture and an image of a favorite cultural event, interaction, or other depiction. They will also describe their favorite cultural experience.
To submit your entry, go to www.staralliance.com/mileagemillionaire and follow the steps to upload your photos and your story. The competition ends July 31, 2017 and the winners will be announced on Sept. 28.
