Alaska Airlines rings in the New Year with a free checked bag

Seattle-based Alaska Airlines is ringing in the new year by offering members of its frequent flier program one free checked bag through the month of January.

“We love our Mileage Plan™ members and to show it we're covering the cost of your first checked bag when you travel January 1-31, 2015, on any Alaska Airlines flight,” the airline said in an email to its Mileage Plan™ members.

Alaska (NYSE:ALK) also took a poke at other airlines, including United (NYSE:UAL) and Delta (NYSE:DAL), that have announced or commenced transitions from mileage-based loyalty plans to revenue-based plans. Click on the links to read more about the changes to those carriers' frequent flier plans.

“As other airlines chip away at their programs this year, we want to thank you by continuing to offer award-winning service and truly global rewards,” the airline said. “We’ve designed Mileage Plan™ from the ground up with your love of travel in mind and we want to celebrate our award-winning program with our members.”

There are some modest conditions to be met. To receive the free checked bag, Mileage Plan™ members and companions must be traveling on the same reservation, at least one valid and active Mileage Plan™ number must be in the reservation at the time of check-in, and flight miles must be credited to Mileage Plan™ to qualify.
