On Tuesday, the third day of Advent, we continued the supreme sacrifice (NOT!) of working our way through the Advent Wine Calendar containing 24 half-bottles of wine from some of the world’s best wine regions. Last night, it was a Right Hook Pinot Noir from the Danube Plain wine region of Bulgaria.
“Bold character and smooth finish” were among the terms used to describe this wine. The Danube Plain, where the grapes were grown, “…is renowned for its picturesque landscapes and thriving viticulture.”
Pretentious verbiage aside, the region does enjoy hot summers and mild winters which are ideal for cultivating a variety of grapes. The area’s nutrient-rich soil also doesn’t hurt.
As with the red blend from Day One, this Pinot is said to pair well with roast duck, grilled salmon, pork tenderloin, mushroom risotto, and grilled veggies. One of our favorite dishes is a wild mushroom risotto and my wife particularly loves grilled salmon, so the menu practically wrote itself.
Tonight’s offering will be lighter: a Rosé called Once Upon a Time from the IGP Aude wine region of France. Join us tomorrow for our review.

Some of the best Pinot Noirs, in our opinion, come from Oregon’s Willamette Valley, where we have gone wine tasting many times. This one was quite a bit "thinner" than many we've enjoyed, such that it would be great on a warm summer evening but not so much on a cooler, fall night. Pleasant, to be sure, but not among the great pinots.
