Our sippable for Day 12 of our Wine Advent-ure was a red blend from the Languedoc wine region in the southern part of France called Latitude 44. Situated along the Mediterranean coast, the Languedoc region is one of the country's largest and most diverse wine-producing areas.
With a winemaking history that dates back to ancient times, Languedoc has embraced modern viticulture while preserving traditional techniques, leading to a renaissance in quality and innovation. Today, it stands out for its commitment to organic and sustainable practices.
Santé!
Latitude 44 is a blend of 50% Syrah, 30% Grenache and 20% Carignan. Winemaker notes say the Syrah brings a bouquet of dark fruits while the Grenache adds a "touch of warmth" with ripe cherry notes, while the Carignan provides acidity and a hint of wild herbs.
I found the bouquet quite light, with dark fruits in short supply. On the palate, I did detect ripe cherry notes along with a deeper flavor akin to "a flutter of tobacco," and a bit of pleasant bite from the Carignan's acidity.
Grilled lamb, roasted duck, cassoulet, ratatouille and aged gouda are among the recommended food pairings.
Santé!
