We continue to work our way into our Advent Wine Calendar, a collection of 24 half-bottles of wine from the many of the world’s best wine regions. Those 24 bottles represent the 24 days leading up to Christmas, and the collection was presented to us at Thanksgiving, just a few days ahead of the first day of Advent this year.
On Monday, the second day of Advent, we raised a glass of Nightfall, a white blend that “evokes the serene beauty of Hungary (with) its complex flavors and balanced sweetness.” See yesterday’s comment about pretention when describing wines.
Flowery verbiage aside, this wine had a rich, golden hue and aromas of apricot, honey and spices on the nose. We thought it was going to be a bit sweeter than we prefer, but it turned out to be what we would characterize as "off-dry."
Instead of something like a Chardonnay, this was more like an Alberino: light and clean, but with few of the fruit and sweet notes on the palate. It washed the food down well but, in our estimation, added very little. Two days in and we're one-for-two.
Tonight, we will remain in Europe as we sip a Right Hook Pinot Noir from the Danube Plain wine region of Bulgaria. Our observations will follow tomorrow.

Based on the description, we had expected it to be reminiscent of an American Chardonnay with too much oak and to not pair well with main courses. Tasting notes recommend foie gras, bleu cheese, spiced desserts like gingerbread (ginger snaps were also in our cupboard), duck liver pâté or chicken liver mousse (Braunschweiger we had, and it was close), and fruit-based desserts.
