Our Wine Advent-ture: Day 22

Now that Christmas and the attendant crazy are behind us, we have settled back into our routine and are finishing off the final wines in our Advent Wine Calendar.

Yesterday's wine was a Sauvignon Blanc from California called "A Seawothy Tale." While the distributor referred to "coastal California," they were not specific about where in coastal California: Napa, Sonoma, Alexander or Anderson Valley, or Central Coast.

Sauvignon Blancs from California, tasting notes say, exhibit aromas of citrus; often with herbaceous, grassy notes; and sometimes tropical fruit nuances.

Sauvignon Blancs are our go-to wine, though we generally reach for those from the Marlborough region of New Zealand because of their bright character and abundant citrus. This one, from California, was smooth and pleasant but without the punch that we've come to appreciate in Sauv Blancs. Not unpleasant by any stretch but very neutral.  It would not bring too many flavors of its own to compete with those of the foods being served. It would also be an easy-drinking wine for those times you're already a few bottles into the evening but would like Just. One. More. Glass.

Suggested food pairings include Vietnamese Spring Rolls, grilled asparagus with lemon zest (which we make at home on occasion), goat cheese, ceviche (which I also make), and sushi with wasabi.  I can see all of those combinations, and look forward to trying them out.
