Day 17 of our Wine Advent-ure brought a change of pace. Our offering last night was an aromatized wine-product known as a calimocho: a mix of equal parts inexpensive, young red wine and cola. Ours was called Tinto del Sol from Portugal.
This drink is served cold and is similar to sangria. Tasting notes say it will pair well with tapas, burger and fries, pizza, barbecue, nachos -- pretty much any summer food -- and after sipping it, I agree.
Like many things, we found this to be a bit of an acquired taste but, given the right foods and setting, I could acquire it. It IS very similar to Sangria, with more cola notes but absent to cola fizz, which I'd braced against. Maybe if we visit Portugal, we'll find just the right food pairings, or a nice warm evening when a cold calimocho would be most welcome.
¡Salud!
