Southwest Airlines has announced that it will join all three major U.S. airlines and virtually all smaller carriers as well as some international airlines in banning the transport of so-called hoverboards aboard its flights over concerns about the safety of the lithium-ion batteries that power the devices.

Southwest's (NYSE:LUV) ban, as well as the ban by American Airlines (NYSE:AAL) will take effect Saturday, Dec. 12. A ban by Delta Air Lines (NYSE:DAL) went into effect today, Dec. 11 while bans by other carriers have been in effect for a matter of days or weeks. Read more here.
