HAARLEM, Netherlands: Café de Paris

By Carl Dombek

On our way to the Grote Markt in Haarlem, we ducked out of the rain and into Cafe' de Paris for a mid-afternoon snack.

Sipping Sauvignon blanc as we waited

In the finest of European tradition, we each had a glass of wine (Sauvignon Blanc) accompanied by a board of delicious breads, herbed butter and aioli, which we snacked on while waiting for our chosen soups.

I had French onion soup, which was topped with a cheesy puff pastry crust rather than the more traditional melted cheese over a crouton, while my wife enjoyed a pumpkin soup with bacon bits and sage pesto. Both were lovely and just the thing to chase away the dampness of this rainy afternoon.

The interior of the cafe' was authentically French, very much evocative the cafes we enjoyed last summer in Paris and Normandy. The service was attentive without being overbearing.

Even though it was midafternoon, many of the tables already had "reserved" signs for the evening meal, so plan ahead if you want to enjoy dinner at this cozy little establishment.
