CHICAGO: The Royal Sonesta, Chicago River North

By Carl Dombek

Thanks to a lengthy stay at a Sonesta property while I was working, I had accumulated enough points for a free night. That was incentive enough to book two nights at this upscale property for a quick trip to Chicago but once I’d checked in, I immediately regretted that I had not decided to stay longer.

Understated entrance to the Royal Sonesta

Located in the heart of the River North area, this hotel projects an understated presence. While a forest of neon signs virtually screams the names of other nearby hotels, the Sonesta blends in with surrounding office buildings, with a modestly sized entrance and more subtle signage.

Making my way out of the 6 degree cold and into the lobby, I was treated to a warm room and a warm welcome from Gustavo, who was staffing the front desk. He checked me in and upgraded me to a suite, which was unexpected but certainly welcome.

Welcome amenity

I was also given a welcome gift of a bottle of Mondavi Cabernet Sauvignon, bottled water, and a coupon for a “continental” breakfast the next morning.

Entering the 16th floor suite, I was blown away! The room, which was more than 21 feet by almost 15 feet, had a king bed, seating area with couch and easy chair, a desk with a proper task chair for those who have to work, a coffee maker, in-room safe, iron and board, and bathrobes waiting in the closet.

The bathroom had a deep, jetted bath tub with bath salts for those who chose, and a separate walk-in shower with a drench showerhead.

Amenities including tooth brush, shaving kit, makeup removing towelette and other items were also provided.

Bath amenities

There are outdoor spaces on the ground floor and on the 17th floor adjacent to the huge, heated indoor pool, though they were closed due to the weather. Being indoors, the pool was open and provided a welcome warming option for many who had just come in from the cold.

After a good night’s sleep in the comfy bed, I headed to CBR, the on-site restaurant, for my included breakfast. Unlike most “continental” breakfasts, this offered a selection of proteins to go with the vanilla yoghurt, fruit and choice of bread. With a large cup of rich coffee, I was set for the morning without feeling overstuffed.

Not your typical Continental breakfast

The physical plant was beautiful and generally well-maintained but staff can make or break an experience. In this case, staff was uniformly excellent, from Gustavo who checked me in to Kate who handled some minor issues the first morning to Cindy at the front desk and the doormen who reminded guests to grab their wool caps “…because it’s COLD today!”

Perhaps because it’s the “dead of winter” the rates were very reasonable, especially for such a luxurious property. Conveniently located off the Grand station of the L’s Red Line, I highly recommend the Royal Sonesta Chicago River North.
