Award-winning tour operator offers sailings along Italy’s Amalfi Coast

The Amalfi Coast has some of the most spectacular scenery in all of Italy. Now, expedition tour operator Peter Sommer Travels is offering travelers the opportunity to explore the area by yacht this September with two new sailings in the popular destination.

The eight day Amalfi Coast tours will be escorted by archaeologist Dr. Sophy Downes and art historian Francesca del Vecchio and offer a unique perspective on one of the world’s most famous coastlines.

Passengers will experience the comforts of a traditional Turkish gulet boat, which has been stylishly refitted in Italy.

A gulet is a traditional design of a two-masted or three-masted wooden sailing vessel, with the two-masted design being the most common. Generally, they are from the southwestern coast of Turkey, built in the coastal towns of Bodrum and Marmaris, but similar vessels can be found in many areas of the eastern Mediterranean. Today, this type of vessel varies in size from 14 to 35 meters, and is popularly used in tourist charters.

This unique gulet cruise visits some of the greatest archaeological and cultural jewels of the Amalfi coast, including the Isle of Capri, the ruins of Pompeii and Amalfi itself, as well as lesser known sites such as the ancient underwater city at Baia and the Roman frescoes of the Villa Oplontis.

In addition to sailing to the island of Ischia, swimming off beautiful Capri and visiting the colorful port of Positano, guests will have time to taste local wines and indulge in delicious Neapolitan pizzas, the company said.

While most tours of the Coast are on land, Peter Sommer offers a truly upmarket experience and opportunity to tour from the water. An intimate complement of just 10 guests will sail aboard the six cabin gulet, which was handcrafted in Turkey and refitted in Italy.

Cruise depart from Naples on Sept. 2 and Sept. 9. Fares start at £3,975 per person in a two-person cabin. The fare, which is approximately US$4,455 at today’s exchange rate, includes airport transfers, seven nights aboard the gulet, all entrance fees, expert guided excursions and Wi-Fi when coverage permits. Fares do not include airfare from the passenger’s home airport to Naples and return.

For those not familiar, Peter Sommer Travels specializes in small-group expeditions, offering more than 20 different expert-led tours and gulet cruises among the ancient sites of Croatia, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Turkey and the U.K.

The company offers a variety of itineraries in addition to the Amalfi Coast. They include family tours, gastronomic tours in Sicily and Turkey, city tours of Athens and Rome, cultural walking holidays and tours of destinations like Crete and the Peloponnese, Wessex and Hadrian’s Wall, and the Aeolian Islands.

Every itinerary is hosted by an expert guide who provides insight into the destinations while guests enjoy the history, culture, magnificent scenery, food and wine of each destination. Peter Sommer Travels was named Tour Operator of the Year 2015 by AITO, the Association of Independent Tour Operators. More information is available at Peter Sommer Travels’ website.
