Business travelers expense some wild and crazy items

As anyone who has ever filed business travel and expense reports knows, it can often be a challenge to get legitimate business expenses approved. Some items understandably need more explanation but others, it seems, are just an excuse for the accounting department to be picky. So I found this list of the Top 10 Craziest Expenses of 2016, as well as which were approved and which denied, to be very interesting and worth sharing.

Automated travel and entertainment expense management software provider Certify surveyed more than 430 business travelers who shared their stories of the most outrageous expenses they had either seen – or submitted – over the past year.

More than half the respondents outed themselves as the person who submitted the expense claim; the rest were divided among the accountant submitting the payment, the manager approving the expense, or a combination of all three categories. The top industries that responded represented software and technology, banking and finance, manufacturing, education and restaurant/hospitality.

As the infographic shows, the expenses ranged from renting a llama to some highly questionable personal expenses presented with an interesting range of reasons (or excuses). I have my opinions about whether the expenses qualify as “outrageous” or not, as well as whether they should have been approved, and I’m sure you will, too.

Read on, and enjoy!
