Honolulu’s Coconut Waikiki Hotel, located on the Ala Wai Canal just minutes from the sands of Waikiki Beach, is getting a major make-over that is scheduled to be completed just in time for the new year.
The “refresh,” as it is referred to in the hospitality industry, is being overseen by award-winning San Francisco-based designer Anthony Laurino, who also designed sister property Shoreline Hotel Waikiki as well as numerous notable California properties.
Inspired by nature’s elements, Laurino brings a brand-new look to the 81-room family-friendly property. The unique colorful and contemporary redesign embraces a clean and neutral background palette with accents of bold colors, mixed with natural woods and relaxing fabrics, according to the hotel.
“Spacious guest rooms will be light and refreshing with splashes of bold color, layered with natural textures and organic patterned fabrics,” the hotel’s operator, Filament Hospitality, said in a statement.
“Inspired by the proximity to the beach, artwork features large colorful graphic illustrations of the ocean and photographs of underwater wildlife. The open and airy lobby reflects Coconut’s modern island style and there will also be a lounge/playroom that both kids and adults can enjoy filled with board games, puzzles, and local literature.”
The hotel’s pool area is also being reimagined with an outdoor patio and a putting green influenced by the neighboring Ala Wai Golf Course, which lies directly across the canal mere yards away from the hotel.
On a separate note, sister property Shoreline Hotel Waikiki recently debuted an “Essential Oils” lobby bar, described by the hotel as “[A] truly unique amenity, which keeps their guests holistic wellness in mind while on the road and [which] is already proving popular.”
Both properties are just steps away from the popular shopping area along Ala Moana Blvd., as well as many of the culinary attractions the area has to offer.
Both the Coconut Waikiki Hotel and sister property Shoreline Hotel Waikiki are managed by Filament Hospitality, which manages 17 upmarket properties in the western U.S. mainland and Hawaii.
